There are a multitude of reasons that a patient might opt for sedation when going to the dentist. Phobias and anxieties over going to the dentist runs so deep in certain patients, dental work is avoided for years. Eventually, the deterioration of neglected teeth ends up much worse, and the procedure the patient feared transitions into a need for multiple procedures. This is even more overwhelming, and starts a vicious cycle of dental avoidance. When the amount of dental work needed is overwhelming, sedation dentistry gives the opportunity to get everything done in one appointment. If sedation dentistry makes sense for you, here are some tips from your Knoxville dentist, Dr. Jim Erpenbach.
Â?Consult with Your Dentist Regarding Concerns about IV Sedation
Be sure to come armed with information to your pre-sedation consultation. Any medications you take should be discussed with your dentist. If you have concerning health symptoms like a cold or flu, call the office immediately. Certain health conditions may require your appointment to be postponed.
Prior to Your Sedation Dental Procedure
Make sure to refrain from eating and drinking at least 4 hours prior to IV sedation, or longer, depending on what the dentist tells you. Do not smoke for 12 hours prior to your appointment, and avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Make arrangements for a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure. For safety reasons the dental office will not allow you to leave without the accompaniment of a responsible adult following IV sedation. Clear your schedule for the entire day of your appointment so that you can give your body the rest it needs for recovery.
The Morning of Your Appointment
Choose clothing that is loose and comfortable, and avoid wearing makeup or nail polish to your appointment. If you have discussed additional oral anti-anxiety medication to relax you prior to your appointment, take it as prescribed. Get yourself in the mind-set that you are going to be taken care of by your dental office staff, and try your best to relax. Deep breathing and meditation might help if you’re particularly keyed up.
