Knoxville dentist, Dr. Jim Erpenbach, is pleased to have been invited to an exclusive conference on biomimetic dentistry. This meeting-of-the-minds is run by David Allman, and will be held in Sardinia. Dr. Erpenbach’s role will be as a Training Mentor for those in attendance, who are primarily European dental professionals. The grueling task of reviewing 64 articles in order to continue his certification as a Training Mentor in biometric dentistry is no simple task, but it’s something that Dr. Erpenbach is happy to do so that he can provide the best and most up-to-date services for his patients.

What is Biomimetic Dentistry?

The biomimetic philosophy revolves around restoration of as much of the existing tooth structure as possible after a tooth is damaged. A biomimetic plan involves ozone treatment, education of patients so that they can have the best possible oral hygiene practices, and preventive dental sealants that can help eliminate tooth decay and periodontal disease recurrences. Root canal treatments and cutting down teeth for crowns are much less often necessary with this approach. Furthermore, tooth sensitivity is less likely with biomimetic dentistry. Patients are happy because procedures are simpler and less expensive.

Mother Nature: The Ultimate Dentist

Nature is the model of biomimetic dentistry. Teeth have what are known as BioMechanical characteristics. When we first study and comprehend the natural anatomy of our teeth, we can more easily mimic the way nature has intended our mouths to work. Our teeth have physical dynamics of force (even bending and moving, believe it or not) which is essential for a dentist to understand if they want to restore a damaged tooth as close to naturally as possible.
